Nellie may also be know by the name Ellen or Helen DePetris.

According to Pat Gillespie's bits & pieces, Grandaunt Nellie Gillespie Depetris lived in NYC, married a DePetris or DePeter, and had a daughter Mary DePetris Delaney of Brooklyn?

Con Gillespie (RIP) recalled that MARY DELANEY (or another daughter Of Nellie G. DePetris) from Brooklyn visited Kilcar in 1928. See below. Another recollection mentions (sister) Kitty Gillespie Sherrin and Nellie DePetris once visited home together. Paddy G. also mentioned later that Ellen (Nellie) Depeters (Depetris) might have brought her daughter's children to Ireland to visit Aunt Jane in Umiskin. (However, if this were near the year 1928, she would have been nearly 73 years of age.)

Mary Ellen (Gillespie) Gallagher's (Cronroad) sister Nora Angela O'Donnell met members of the Sherrin family at a funeral in NY some years ago. Nora Angela also met members of the DePetris family in the states.

In researching passanger lists, Paddy Gillespie in his 3 Oct. 1994 letter, recommended starting around 1928, the year of the Presidential Elections in the USA. The reason, I believe one of our greataunts was home in Umiskin around these years, NELLIE DePETER or DePetris. She probably used the name Ellen instead of Nellie. Paddy's brother Con and his father Charlie went over to Umiskin to see her. Con cannot remember much except that she gave him pencils with the head of Al Smith who was a Catholic from NY running against FDR. Con would have been 7 or 8 years old in 1928. Paddy thought those pencils would have been around 1927-1929. She probably did not travel in wintertime. A search should include both ways.

AL SMITH...was governor of New York, 1919-1920;1923-1928. In 1928, he made his bid for the Presidency. Unfortunately, he was 30 years ahead of his time before the country was willing to accept a Roman Catholic as its leader. FDR ran and was elected. Al Smith, a native son of East Manhattan, was a product of a close-knit Irish neighborhood, the Catholic Church, and Tammany Hall.
