In about 1983, the Donegal Assn. of NY, published information of
interest on members and family: "More than 250 family members and
friends from far and near gathered at the Fort Hamilton Officers'
Club in Brooklyn to honor Kilcar centenarian Catherine Gallagher
Gildea. Telegrams, citations, and greetings were received from An
Taoiseach, Mr. Charles Haughey; the President of the United States;
the Governor of NY and every political dignitary in the City of
NY. Willie Joe Cunningham presented a plaque to Mrs. Gildea on
behalf of the Donegal Assn. and this was especially appreciated by
Mrs. Gildea's family, including her nieces, Mrs. Nora Gildea, Mrs.
Brigid Butler, and Mrs. Kitty [(These are Cunningham sisters,
daughters of Catherine's sister Sara?)] Shovelin who had journeyed
from Kilcar for the occaision." Mrs. Gildea was born Catherine
Gallagher of Cronroad, Kilcar. She emigrated to Brooklyn, NY
in 1907 and on a subsequent trip to Ireland met Patrick Gildea,
whom she married in Brooklyn, NY in 1915. They had four children,
eight grandchildren, and five ggchildren. "From the time of their
marriage, Kate and Pat Gildea's home was where the Irish from
Kilcar gathered. During the heavy years of emigration, when young
Irish girls went into domestic service, it was to Aunt Kate they
turned for guidance and to her they came on their Thursday off. As
a result, Thursday night at Gildeas' was the place to be and as a
result many wedding receptions were celebrated at the home of Aunt
Kate and Uncle Pat."
